Description

1864, Group portrait of the Washington family, depicting George Washington, Martha Washington, Eleanor Parke Custis, and George Washington Parke Custis seated around a table in a room, while an African-American enslaved man enters in the right background. A plan of Washington D.C. is laid out on the table before them. Washington holds a book in this left hand, and a sword and hat are laid on an empty chair in front of him. The slave carries a letter on a tray.
