The number of claws on a Chinese dragon represent different groups of people that lived in China. 5 Claws stood for the Chinese Royal Family, only they could have a dragon with 5 claws. 4 claws is minor nobility and government officials. For the rest of the population they could only have a dragon with 3 claws.
